AAI GM Chess Final report: Caruana wins title, Sasikiran second

Italian grandmaster Fabiano Caruana was assured of at least a joint title win despite his first loss in the tournament to second seed Viktor Laznicka in Round 9. Eventually, in the final round on Saturday, in the Indian capital city of New Delhi, he pulled of a nice draw with Wesley So of the Philippines to win the event.
In second place was Indian grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran who had drawn with Parimarjan Negi in the ninth round and hou Yifan in the tenth round. On the final day, the third game between Negi and Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic was also a draw.
The winner Caruana received the trophy from Mr. V P Agrawal, Chairman of the Airport Authority of India, and also the first prize of $ 8,000. Sasikiran’s winnings were $ 6,000 for the tournament. The third to sixth finishers received $ 4,000, $ 3,000, $ 2,000 and $ 1,500.
The results (ninth round): Viktor Laznicka (Cze, 5) bt Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 6.5) in 40 moves; K. Sasikiran (Ind, 5.5) drew with Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 3) in 48 moves; Wesley So (Phi, 4.5) drew with Hou Yifan (Chn, 2.5) 47 moves.
Results of the tenth and final round: F Caruana drew with W So; H Yifan drew with K Sasikiran; Negi P drew with V Laznicka

Surely Fabiano Caruana is in good form at the AAI GM Chess - a Category 17 tournament - currently on in New Delhi. In Round 8 at the tournament - with only two more rounds to go - the Italian grandmaster comfortably beat the current women's world chess champion Hou Yifan from China even as GM Viktor Laznicka from the Czech Republic lost to Indian Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran. Also, GM Parimarjan Negi - current Indian national champion - beat Philippines' GM Wesley So.

The seventh round at the AAI GM Chess Tournament in New Delhi, India saw some exciting chess like the previous rounds. While Wesley So beat Viktor Laznicka, Hou Yifan beat Parimarjan Negi. The third game - between Krishnan Sasikiran and Fabiano Caruana - was one see saw battle. Sasikiran said at the press conference, "I was worse in the opening but then had a chance. But in the end I suppose I made some mistake, I don't know. I thought I was winning for a while."
The standings after seven rounds are as follows:

2. Sasikiran, Laznicka, Wesley So 4.0
3. Hou 2.0
4. Negi 1.5

Talented Italian youngster Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana was at his flowing best in the sixth round at the AAI GM Chess in New Delhi on Tuesday to take a full point off Indian national champion GM Parimarjan Negi. The latter went down fighting in a game that went all the way to the ropes. The other four drew their games!

In the fourth round, Krishnan Sasikiran ground down Hou Yifan for a nice win while Parimarjan Negi went down struggling to Viktor Laznicka.

The chess news from New Delhi - where the Airports Authority India Chess Tournament of Category 17 is on - is that Fabiano Caruana from Italy has taken sole lead. He has won all his three rounds while Hou Yifan has lost all her three rounds. Viktor Laznika who had won the first two rounds ended up losing the third round to Sasikiran Krishnan. The latter had lost the first two rounds. Meanwhile, Parimarjan Negi and Wesley So drew their game today. Both have a win and a loss each from the first two rounds.

Hello everyone,
India is hosting their highest-ever category tournament - the Airports Authority of India chess event with six top grandmasters in New Delhi from June 22. You can watch a live stream at this link and live games at this link. For access to the official event website click here.
The category 17 event includes Hou Yifan from China, Fabiano Caruana from Italy, Wesely So, Viktor Laznicka, Parimarjan Negi and Krishnan Sasikiran. The tournament offers prizes worth $24,500 with the winner taking $8,000 and the runner-up $6,000.
