Karpov Chess Simul in Russian Regional Prison: 13 Wins, 2 Draws!

Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2014

Hello everyone,

Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov held a chess simul with inmates and staff at the regional prison in the Ryazan region on Sunday, February 9, according to a press release. The legendary chess player also held a press conference ahead of the event and spoke about the role of chess in the education and reform of convicts. GM Karpov had earlier visited the regional prison for a chess exhibition in 2000. The 15-board simul earned the former World Chess Champion 13 wins and two draws (!) with junior inspector of security, prison no. 1, ordinary internal service Lesya Soroka and representative of the regional branch of the Russian public organization of veterans of the MIS in the Ryazan region, retired colonel Nicholas Mills. Mills and Soroka won special gifts for their achievement.

That's Russia for you: Anyone can hold a chess great to a draw!

GM Karpov did not leave without signing autographs and getting photographed with everyone.
