Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hello everyone,

The 2014 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival will take place from Monday 27th January to Thursday 6th February, 2014. The Festival has again been voted Best Open in the World by the Association of Chess Professionals.

This year there are five events: Masters, Challengers Wk1 (U2250), Challengers Wk2 (U2250), Amateurs Wk1 (U1900) and Amateurs Wk2 (U1900).

This year the tournament will boast more than fifty Grandmasters and over a hundred titled players. Last year’s winner was GM Nikita Vitiugov who returns to the 2014 Masters which is already fully subscribed with two months to go to the tournament.

Once again the festival will attract close to 400 people, including players, families, officials, and visitors, staying ten nights or more in Gibraltar and in neighbouring Spain. With strong emphasis on the women’s game the 2014 10-day event will see a higher ratio than ever of female players (40+).

Fifty countries will be represented, including players travelling from: Bangladesh, Namibia, Egypt, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Brazil, with record numbers travelling from India (12), China (6), and Norway (20). Simen Agdestein, former coach of new 22-year old World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, is bringing his chess students from Oslo.
