47th Begonia Open Chess from March 9

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hello everyone,

Here is some quick chess tournament news via Fide. The Ballarat Chess Club will host the 47th Begonia Open over the Labour Day long weekend from Saturday 9 March to Monday 11 March 2013.
This tournament promises to build on the success of previously held tournaments and is growing in popularity every year. There were 131 entries last year with Patrick Scharrer, Domagoj Dragecevic and Brodie McClymont finishing equal first on 6 points.

All games and presentations will be held at the Student Amenities Centre (Old Ballarat Gaol Building), School of Mines Ballarat Campus of the University of Ballarat, Lydiard Street South, Ballarat. This is the same venue as used in recent years.

Rate of Play - All moves in 90 minutes per player, plus 30 seconds per move from move 1.

There are three rating sections, determined by dividing the total number of players with a rating of less than 2000, by three. Unrated players will be initially placed in an appropriate group by the arbiter, but may be adjusted after three rounds. Final rating groups will be displayed prior to the start of round four.

Refreshments and light snacks will be available at the tournament canteen. Neat casual dress is considered desirable, and no smoking is permitted within the tournament building.

Grand Prix and FIDE Rated Event: This year the tournament will be a Category 3 Grand Prix event and the results will be submitted to FIDE for rating purposes.

Entries will be accepted until 12:30pm on the first day of play.
Entries may be posted to Ballarat Chess Club in advance:
Ballarat Chess Club, Box 1242, Ballarat Mail Centre Vic 3354.
