Chess Queen Alexandra Kosteniuk begins Nalchik Women's Chess Grand Prix with a super win over Zhu Chen

Hello everyone,

Some sweet chess news. Chess Queen Alexandra Kosteniuk began the third edition of the Women's Chess Grand Prix in Nalchik with a power-packed win over Zhu Chen on Sunday.

The symbolic first move in the game between Zhu Chen (QAT) against Alexandra Kosteniuk (RUS) (both women's world chess champions crowned in the years 2001 and 2008 respectively) was made by Aslan Afaunov, Minister of Sport, Tourism and Resorts of KBR. It is interesting that these two players played the final match of the Women's World Chess Championship about 10 years ago, in winter 2001, and since then they haven't met at the chessboard.

That time Kosteniuk had lost and Chen became the World Champion. Of course Chess Queen went on to win the world chess title herself in 2008. On Monday, after winning the game, Kosteniuk said, this game was very symbolic for her and she was glad that she managed to win the first game.

There were two other decisive games on Day at the Grand Prix with Zhao Xue beating Viktorija Cmilyte and Nadezhda Kosintseva losing to Ju Wenjun. The other games were a draw. Visit the official website here
